Whole Life Insurance: What Is It?

Whole life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance designed to provide coverage for your entire life, as long as required premiums are paid and the policy remains in force.

Unlike term life insurance, which provides coverage for a specific number of years, whole life insurance is intended to stay in place for life and also builds cash value over time.

How Does Whole Life Insurance Work?

With a whole life policy, you pay premiums to an insurance company in exchange for a death benefit that is paid to your beneficiaries when you die.

Part of the premium supports the cost of insurance, while another portion helps build the policy’s cash value. That cash value typically grows on a tax-deferred basis according to the guarantees and terms of the policy.

Depending on the policy, you may be able to access the cash value through withdrawals or policy loans while you are living. Loans and withdrawals can reduce the policy’s cash value and death benefit and may have tax consequences in certain situations.

Whole life policies may also include guaranteed premiums, guaranteed cash value growth, and a guaranteed death benefit, depending on the contract. Some policies may also be eligible for dividends, although dividends are not guaranteed.

Who Is Whole Life Insurance Suited For?

Whole life insurance may be appropriate for someone who wants:

  • Lifetime insurance protection rather than temporary coverage
  • A predictable premium structure
  • A guaranteed death benefit for beneficiaries
  • Cash value accumulation within the policy
  • Money set aside for final expenses or estate-planning needs
  • Coverage for a permanent financial need that is expected to remain throughout life

Whole life insurance can also be useful in certain business, estate-planning, or legacy-planning situations.

For someone whose primary goal is simply to obtain the largest amount of life insurance protection at the lowest initial cost, term life insurance may be a better fit.

The right choice depends on the reason for the coverage, how long the protection is needed, budget, and overall goals.

Education first. No pressure. Just options.
